real men – and women – who have put aside the temptation to retreat into a frivolous fantasy world are tromping through the wilds of Afghanistan. Such young adults, some younger (in years) than the “bronies,” are protecting all of us – including these pathetic weirdoes.

My whole life I've wanted to serve my country in some way, at first I figured on being a teacher (Still likely will become one) but recently I've been considering joining the military, I can't do air force (No mechanic experience and poor eyesight, well that and I'm too tall to fly a fighter) and my father said he'd kill me if I joined the army.
So I signed up for the navy to serve as a second lieutenant once I graduate University (2 years of required service). If I like it I may go career, if not well I've got plans for the police force.
For Queen and Country!
Back to that article however I knew something like that existed I guess I just hoped the author would be someone who watched an episode and simply didn't like it or found it stupid rather than something this...ignorant? I suppose the word is?
Unfortunately Due to our status as a 'Commonwealth nation' they are one in the same. By joining the military I'm actually agreeing to fight for 'Queen and Country' which just shows how out of date our military pledge is.
The Queen of Canada sounds like a joke title way more than the Queen of England does.
'Full' title is even better; "Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith"
Unfortunately Due to our status as a 'Commonwealth nation' they are one in the same.
It would be more correct to say 'Commonwealth Realm'. Although Canada is also part of the Commonwealth of Nations it is her status as part of the Commonwealth Realm (a subset of the former) that makes the Queen her Head of State.
The problem with your analogy is that MLPFiM is not in any sense of the definition a 'meme' it isn't as widespread as it is simply because of a whole bunch of people thinking it is good or funny for no particular reason. (Although, like some memes I'm sure there are people who watch the show simply because other people in their social circle are doing it, or possibly just due to the fact that it's becoming a popular fandom) The shows following is as large as it is due to the fact that MLPFiM IS a good show, if not a great one. It features a lot of the slapstick humour that used to exist in older cartoons (Looney Toons being the prime example, MLP borrows a lot of slapstick humour from it and Looney Toons itself is still as popular now as it was when it was just starting off) and the plethora of references that can be found multiple times throughout each episode. (Some, obviously are much more noticeable/obvious than others but there's a magic to it) Beyond that the story is character driven, hell some of the development is on par with what I expect from shows like Stargate or Doctor Who. The animation is freaking amazing for something done with flash, and frankly there's just something about the show that can cheer a person up, no matter how shitty their day was before watching it.
Finally and you can't really argue against this. How many memes or tv shows have a following as active as MLP? The sheer amount of material created by the fanbase is ridiculous, there's what is effectively a newspaper, a satirist radio broadcast, several individuals creating remixes, original music and artwork around the show. Not to mention the original animations and videos. Then there's Bronycon, a staple of any fandom is a form of convention (Comiccon, Anime North, etc.) that brings the artists and creators and fans together.
While the show may die out in time I doubt the fandom will, hell Star Wars and Star Trek both have a massive following and they haven't exactly been in their prime since the original trilogy and Captain Picard respectively.
meme, obscure thing, a thing to like cuz people hate it
How bout this, its comparable to an anime and anime fans. They like the art style, obsess over it, make tons of porn of it, makes tons of fan art over it, and get overly upset when someone says they don't like their show for whatever reason, for example, its average.
@Thrax Okay yes, I'm wrong there is it wrong of me to have tried to use it regardless of my knowledge of the franchise beyond the only one I ever paid attention to? (Don't answer that)
@Famicon how many 'bronies' do you know? Yes there are individuals who make r34 of it and yes people obsess over it, and you're right again that some get way too upset over it. The problem however is that you're trying to generalize something that can't be generalized. Hell every fandom has its more...extreme members but there are good parts of it too.
Just look at the shows fans here at Icrontic we're about as down to Earth as you can get and honestly I don't care whether you like the show or not I'm just trying to show you that first impressions aren't always the right ones.

Also, if you care to check the comments on that article, mine should be fairly obvious.

Commence the dealing with it.
The fans are hilarious though
