I read this really interesting page on how Lateralus has all sorts of hidden meanings, some of which are obvious, and other which are not at all. My friend (a Tool freak) has explained some of them to me, but even this one I don't think he found.
There are many references to spirals in the album (as that's what the name means), but if you reorder the tracks in a certain way, the whole thing makes more sense, apparently. I'm giving it a run under the revised track listing right now, and things DO flow more smoothly.
Collections of Colonies of Bees - Funeral (Saw these guys on Friday, was amazing) Schlong - Days of Our Livers Odd Nosdam - 11th Ave. Freak Out pt. 2
The last two were from 75 Minutes. Also, at the end, under "In Advance: John Vanderslice feedback" my comment on the song (from last week) gets read. Nifty
Again, 75minutes provides me with awesome music. This stuff is in the spirit of Volta do Mar. Very very very good.
!
I'm so glad that was finally put on there. Great stuff, for a great band. Did you know the bassist is actually a member on that site (you know what I'm talking about)?
Winter Equinox - Safe and Sound
Oh. My. God. FINALLY! I heard the Demo 02 many many moons ago, and have been waiting for their full-length ever since. It's every bit as amazing as the "demo" was. So excited.
Also Volta Do Mar/Piglet-esque, but with xylos and chimes and other happy instruments that are slightly happier than your run-of-the-mill post/math-rock.
Are all these sub-genres really necessary, or is it something Pitchfork makes up to keep from getting bored, in-between thesaurus-thumping their readers?
Sorry, overclassifying music has always bugged me. Maybe I'm the only one that thinks it's overclassifying, though.
Oh, Pitchfork pulls a lot of stuff out of their collective ass, for sure.
But I think post-rock and possibly math-rock definitely deserve the title. Math rock is so complicated, with so many time changes it's unbelievable. I don't know why post-rock is called that, exactly... maybe because it's so doomy? I don't know.

I'll be honest, it's not as good as Eternal Cowboy by any stretch of the imagination, but still better than 90% of **** put out today.

But for the most part, no.
