The Drop Reset Report: Halloween Edition

The Drop Reset Report: Halloween Edition

It’s been an exciting horror-filled first week of TF2’s 2012 Spectral Halloween Special. Ghosts, zombies, cursed souls and balloons are just a sample—not only of the game play but the hats. Including different qualities, there were more than one hundred different items introduced to the Mann-Conomy for the event. You’ve only got a week left, so let’s get started so you can get your fair share of items!

Boss Hat

TF2 Merasmus The Wizard

Like a Boss

This years TF2 Scream Fortress event boss is the wizard Merasmus. The Soldier’s room mate is here to take revenge. He may be here to exterminate everyone Soldier knows, but you can fight back—and if you can take him down and brave Skull Island, Merasmus’ hat—The Skull Island Topper—is yours.

Just like previous years, the Halloween boss is not going down one-on-one. When Merasmus shows up in this year’s Halloween map—Ghost Fort—it takes both teams cooperating to even have a chance at killing him in the given ninety seconds. Even then, killing him does not get you the hat. When Merasmus dies he is replaced by a large book called “The Bombinomicon” for a short time. Any players that jump into the book are teleported to Skull Island, where they can enter the giant skull and jump into the talking Skull Island Topper to earn the A Lovely Vacation Spot necromannchievement and be awarded The Skull Island Topper the next time they collect drops.

Crate, Eerie

New Eerie keys are for sale in the Mann-co Store, and crates are dropping to go with them. Crate series 50 has been skipped, assigning the Eerie crates series 51. The new holiday crate brings twenty-two community-made hats, misc items and even a multi-class weapon. Some items will be wearable year-round while the majority of them have the Halloween restriction. All of these items acquired out of Eerie crates are Haunted quality except for the typical 1% chance at an unusual in which would have one of five new unusual effects; Knifestorm, Misty Skull, Harvest Moon, It’s A Secret To Everybody, and Stormy 13th Hour. The description on the Eerie crates indicate that if not opened by November 8th, they will disappear.

Big ol’ Cursed Pile of Voodoo

For the duration of the Halloween event, along with the normal drops, players have a chance of being awarded random Voodoo-Cursed Items. There are seven different random items; crazy stuff like a Voodoo-Cursed Novelty Bass. Any seven of the cursed items can be crafted together to create a Pile Of Curses. Similar to the Pile Of Ash from the Pyromania update, the Piles are free to open without a key.

Players can “Reach In” to a Pile Of Curses from their backpack to pull out a Voodoo Cursed Soul. Cursed Souls are new misc items for each class that, when equipped, visually turn players into zombies. There is a chance that there will be an Eerie Crate or Spell awarded with the Voodoo Cursed Soul and a smaller chance that the Soul will be Haunted. As with the crates, all Voodoo items and Pile of Curses will vanish at the end of the event on or after November 8th. All souls will remain, but with the Halloween restriction.

Crazy Random Giant Gifts

For one more week while playing on Ghost Fort, random gifts will appear for players. In years past, one gift would appear and players that found it and touched it before it disappeared had a chance at a random item. This year there are player-specific gifts, and only the particular player can grab theirs when it comes up. Running into the gift will award the player some Halloween loot next time they die. They might receive a handful of Voodoo Cursed Items, an uncraftable version of a community-created Halloween item, or a Halloween Spell.

Halloween spells are tools that you can apply to a hat, misc or weapon that then make spooky things happen when they are equipped. The twenty-six different spells include: a spell for each class that changes their voice in-game, seven spells that make the player leave behind spooky footprints of different colors, five spells that change the color of a hat or misc item, and four weapon-specific spells that change the look of grenades, rockets and fire. Lastly there is an exorcism spell that can be applied to any weapon that can do damage and makes little ghost animations come up from players killed by it. All spells and effects will only last for the duration of this year’s Halloween event.

Ghostly Gibus

Ghostlyerest

Ghostly Gibus

The Ghastly Gibus received its upgrade as expected. This year the new Ghostly style was added to each existing Gibus. The Ghostly style is a plain Ghastly Gibus with a small ghost popping out of the top.

Small change

  • All Haunted items have their own color now, instead of being the same color as unusual items.
  • An issue that did not allow Sniper Rifles to detonate Pumpkin bombs and damage bosses has been fixed.
  • A pumpkin icon was added to backpack images of items that can be worn only on Halloween.
  • A Balloonicorn icon was added to backpack images of cosmetic items that can only be seen in Pyrovision.
  • A bug with the War Pig’s team colors has been fixed.
  • The maximum file size for the Workshop has been increased to 100 MB.

Question of the week

What do you think of this years event? Have you found any cool items? What is your favorite Halloween load out?

This is Digi signing off. Keep on grabbing those items and I’ll see you next week right here on The Drop Reset Report.

  1. MAGIC
MAGIC Great article Bobby, and I love reading your posts, but does anyone else feel turned away from TF2 because of all the "stuff" that has been added in the last year+?

I was fine with unlocking weapons based on class specific achievements, but then random drops, crates, hats, special weapons, and all this stuff.. to me make the game feel accessible.

I loved the easy to jump into, stylized, and fun experience that TF2 used to be... but I'm not sure if it's still there. I'm probably wrong, but that's my feeling.
  2. Tushon
Tushon I'd say you can have the easy to jump into experience still. They are adding lots of depth, in trading, making your own, Source Filmmaker, etc, but you can stay on the surface and just enjoy the game, ignoring drops or equipping them as they come. None of them are absolute deal breakers for playing.
  3. BobbyDigi
BobbyDigi As for some of the stuff I completely understand your feelings. Hats and misc items not so much because most of them only slightly change the look of a class and I feel the universally recognizable silouetes are mostly kept therefore not effecting game play (other than a possible distraction). As for weapons, I have had many expiriences where weapons were released and I came up against them in game before I knew what thier stats were yet. I can only imagine being away for an extended amount of time and coming back to many items I do not recognize.

I do feel like the balance is kept up on well though meaning if a weapon is added with a "buff" from what it is replacing, there is an equal nerf to something that evens it out. I believe that this keeps it easy to jump in with default weapons and still neither be at an advantage or disadvantage. Some would argue the default weapons are still the best balance.

  4. primesuspect
primesuspect I was in the same boat, @Magic, but once I started playing again, I realized that 90% of the changes were cosmetic and the game itself is still just plain fun. MvM has rebooted TF2 for me and made it a game I play almost every single night again. The new difficulty levels have created an experience akin to raiding in an MMO: Multiple runs to practice and learn the fight, constant bickering and experimenting with loadouts, class makeup, and upgrade paths, and a tremendous sense of victory when you complete it.

You should try doing MvM with us, it's a TON of fun.
  5. Bandrik
    Bandrik Fantastic write-up, Digi.

So far I've scored the Spy and Pyro souls, as well as a haunted Crone Dome (witch's hat) and a haunted Owl (pet for Sniper). Simply delightful! :D
  6. Bandrik
Bandrik Scream Fortress 2 2012 draws to a close. How did everyone fare? What were the coolest items you uncovered from those delightful Piles of Curses?

For me, I was able to earn or trade to get the Voodoo Cursed Soul (makes you a zombie) for every class except for Engie. I also scored the Heavy's haunted tutu and the pumpkin balloon prop, as well as Merasmus' skull hat. I'm pretty happy.
  7. RahnalH102
RahnalH102 I got 4 unique haunted VooDoo Souls, Haunted Balloon, Haunted Ghost Buddy, Haunted Plutonidome, Upgraded my Snipers Halloween costume from last year to Haunted somehow, Ol' Snaggletooth, the attendant, heavy's fairy wings, and two refined metal. I enjoy the ghost buddy the most.
  8. primesuspect
primesuspect The coolest things I got were a voodoo-cursed Demoman soul with "Haunted" quality (which I understand is a bit rare)

    And a level 94 Haunted rump-o-lantern:

  9. primesuspect
primesuspect @Bandrik, I have two engie souls. You can have one. Trade request me when you get a chance.
  10. BobbyDigi
BobbyDigi I picked up a few cool things...

    image

    image

Shortly after taking those screenies I picked up the remaining Haunted Voodoo Souls. I made it through the entire event without opening a single Eerie crate so the only thing Haunted non-soul item I have is a Haunted Bat Outta Hell that Pirateninja very generously gave me :-D

  11. Bandrik
Bandrik Holy cow. Digi, I expected you to do well, but... piss. That's overwhelming. DAT LOOT.

Also, @Brian, thank you so much for the offer. I think I'll take you up on that. If you'd like I can give you a weapon or something in return.
