Well, until the lag issues are cleaned up, including combat, I'm out. Just got myself blown up 5 times by creepers I couldn't even see, which also destroyed the only entrance to my safehouse. So now I spawn and /home into a crater that I can't get out of that's full of creepers and skeletons I can't fight.

    See everyone after the reset.

I too am looking forward to seeing an updated aerial shot. I just finished repairing the Tiberius Labyrinth (literally just now, 9pm EST), as well as finishing a few other personal projects. It'll be nice to see what they look like from the air.

Hey, wanted to throw this out there. Are we still doing a Viking Funeral of the Icrontinent 1.0 (by blowing everything up party) tomorrow (Friday), if so what time should we all get together?

I know the server flip is scheduled for Dec 3rd @ 9 PM EST time... so for those that want to blow stuff up, should we meet at 7:30 pm or something? That would allow an hour and a half of fun before we all get reincarnated. Just enough time to have schenanigans.

Of course, nothing should go boom until Ryder formally announces that he's checked and double-checked that he's made a FINAL back-up of the Icrontinent 1.0 and put it somewhere safe where Jimmy can no longer touch it. :D

Ok everyone. Listen up. THIS will NOT be tolerated anymore:

    KP.png

This bullcrap has GOT to stop. it isn't funny. It isn't cute. It isn't excusable. Above is what's left of Kingpin's elaborate forest home. Funny how similar this is to my home tree burning down a second time. No one seems to know what happened, no one wants to fess up.

This crap is over. I don't care why it happened, I don't care how it was started, but this will NOT continue.

Yes. I'm mad. I'm furious. If you guys can't play by the rules, then don't log on.

I want there to be much stricter requirements before letting someone on the whitelist. I want only TRUSTWORTHY players that don't have a mind to ruin everyone else's work.

And here's how we're going to fix this. Ryder, do you have access to player connection logs from the server? We can pinpoint everyone who was on. You posted the image of the server map at 11:03PM EST. The image clearly shows Kingpin's forest intact. It is now 1:45AM EST. Some point in those two and a half hours a player was in the server and started this fire.

I want a list of those players. I don't wish to imply that anyone here has been the cause of this fire, but I do hope to have the truth, and I hope someone has the common courtesy to step up about this.

We start the new server tomorrow. This little trend will not continue. I suggest we install the script that auto-saves a copy every hour or so, and I suggest we ban flint and steel. It's been nothing but trouble since the start.

I apologize for being short on all of this (lol6foot7), but for those who have never had their work vandalized in this game, you have no idea how rage-inducing it is to have your stuff ruined.

Oh, and Kingpin's massive stone fort in the ocean? That entire thing was wood in the middle, and guess what? All burned down.

This was COMPLETELY intentional. Whoever did this, you make me sick. Piss off and never return.

There's some pretty base functionality that gets removed by that mod. Not sure how I feel about that.

This is an administrative issue. Someone has gotten in and is doing destructive things outside of the general code of conduct. Using a technology solution that blocks legitimate uses (in the future, I'd like to be able to use TNT for larger projects, for example) is a poor solution (I've worked in IT long enough to know this firsthand).
  • CBCB Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Der Millionendorf- Icrontian

I would personally be pretty disappointed if we had to completely turn off fire or TNT. :/

There must be an administrative solution. Perhaps we could be more selective with the new whitelist, or maybe set-up an admin list to allow only the people we trust most to use fire and TNT.

What would be most useful is some-kind of activity log, which would tell us who used fire and TNT, and where and when they used it, so that we could run it more like the real world, where people get punished for having done bad things, rather than being punished for the potential to do bad things.

    (oh wait...)

    Ok, I was slightly wrong.

Newest backup is November 30 at 2:30pm.. not December 2.

Will be restoring to that moment.

Sorry to those that "finished" something.

If (which may not be too hard) I can figure out the changed files. Might be able to merge and get unburnt and finished.

EDIT: Holy crap.. there is a TON of difference.

I have done some more digging, the server log does go back far enough to sort this out, but as you can see, there was nobody on the server to burn anything (except me).

The Hey0 update or the Minecraft update almost had to cause this somehow.

After I logged in to check, I deleted the Minecraft server jar (because my client updated on the way in) and so now waiting for Hey0 update, because server won't run.

    Ladies and gentlemen:

Installing the server mod that disables flint & tinder, dynamite and hand-placed lava floes doesn't disable anything that people already shouldn't be doing. There is no practical reason to use any of these materials. Let me explain why:

    1. Flint and tinder: people will still be able to light furnaces with the mod install, as it includes a new tool that can be used for this purpose. With the elimination of duping and mass material spawning, there's no longer a need to burn materials in the world--any unneeded materials will despawn in due time.

    2. Dynamite: TNT significantly damages the world, is completely uncontrollable, and has been abused beyond belief in the server as it stands. I'm not talking about the group-endorsed explode-a-thons, but rather dynamite placement that has ruined the creations of other people. I don't need to name names, but we're all aware that this is happening. If you want to excavate, you can excavate by hand, just like every other server does.

    3. Lava floes: Lava is destructive to the environment, dangerous to players and hard to farm. If you want above-ground lava, you're still free to build a stone channel for it, but the lava will no longer indiscriminately steamroll anything in its path.

People can argue for better moderation or more responsible players as a more "elegant" solution, but the former can't get any better, and the latter can't be tracked in any meaningful way. The only fair way to make sure that everyone's crap stays intact is to disable tools that nobody has a legitimate need for anyhow.

This is why I endorse Llamacraft.

Jeez, this is quite the mess...

First, is November 30th REALLY the most recent backup? If so, I'm not going to lie. I'm going to be upset. I logged a good 5+ hours of finishing up my house over the last 3 days and fixing the Tyberius Labyrinth since it was a feature I was always sad to see blemished.

If restoring to Nov 30th is the only way to fix Hitman's fortress, then so be it. But I hope backups will be more frequent in the new server.

As for "who dun it?", I don't know what to add. I was in the server pretty much most of the day yesterday, and there were only TWO people that popped in, and it was around 7pm or so. I saw SCLisi and Thracks. Neither said a thing, and were only in for a minute or two. I trust them, and even if it were someone else, a minute isn't a lot of time to run across the map and light something.

My best guess is that it was a glitch.

As for the anti-griefing patch, I seriously frown on them. Flint and steel and TNT is in the game for a reason. When used smartly, they both help a lot. I use flint often to clear trees THAT ARE NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING ELSE BY AT LEAST 3 SQUARES to save time clearing leaves (since leaves now float forever instead of decaying... until a new patch fixes this), and TNT makes clearing a mountain off 5 times faster if you have enough (now that we can easily kill creepers with a bow for gunpowder, we'll have more TNT to use).

This won't be a popular opinion, but personally I think people need to consider that fire is a reality. "Lightning" can strike at any time. When you build things, keep in mind what fire can do. Build literal firewalls to keep parts of your house sectioned off, so if a part does burn, it'll only be a single room, etc.

YES, this all sucks. YES, my heart lurches every time I see another pic of someone's great creation burned. I was online when Jackie's treehouse was burning; the day before, she was showing me its elaborate rooms. Seeing it burn was heartwrenching.

But that's life. If it burns down, build it again, twice as fast, twice as good. This goes for the stuff I may have to replace today if the backup doesn't hold my recent plans.

Ryder, let me know if/when you restore a backup. If you could, please just give me an hour to fix them, before it gets archived. Okay? Thanks in advance if you can do this for me.

Update: I just saw Ryder's post about the server being restored pre-fire. What date is that restore point?

    11-30 backup file 192,814KB
    12-3 backup file 284,220 KB

    WTF?

I finished the Dark Castle Wed night, this included two very large buildings and surrounding walls. I also created a library with many chests and started filling them. I don't know if that would cause 90MB difference but I'm sure it added to it.

That said, if there was to be a restore I would loose as much as the UPS guys in the fire. I can only request a copy of the current map before it is restored (if possible).

Also in for the new whitelist, user BobbyDigital

PS. I know first hand how shitty it feels to ruin someone else's work. Accidents happen. If someone did this I would hope they would fess up. This time though it does look from the log that it may have been a glitch, it's an Alpha build. I think if there is a log of what users are on when, in combination with a white list of trusted players should continue to do the server well.

Yeah man, I saw that dark castle on the new map screenshot Ryder posted last night. That was pretty frickin epic man.

That -would- be a shame if that's not in the server restore. Sounds like we're in the same boat if that were the case. Fingers crossed.

Looks like there was an update today, and some neat things have been added. Update log here. Some highlights are:
    • Items no longer get used when opening chests
    • Added /kill command. Does 1000 points damage to the player
    • The join server page now remembers the port as well as the ip
    • Added lakes and rare lava pools, both on the surface and randomly in caves.
    • Players connecting to a server or respawning are invulnerable for three seconds
I'm particularly looking forward to the underground lakes and surface lava pools. Glad we're doing the server reset now to include these landmarks in the topographic generations.

As we are coming up on the reset tonight is it possible to just get two copies of the current map distributed? 1 pre burn and 1 post burn? This has turned into server politics over what seems to already have boiled down to a glitch.

Seems like some very enterprising person could combine the two maps with an editor, but that may be dependent on how close the possibly destroyed objects were to each other major projects. If they were far apart it wouldn't be too bad, just clone them from preburn to new maps then clone that to same location in post burn world.

Thrax, I can't make water troughs so I haven't wasted my time trying with lava; the Minecraft wiki entry for making water stay in a trench never worked for me. I've never had enough gunpowder to make a TNT, but all I need to do to dig an enormous hole is stand in place for a few seconds while a creeper finds me. Flint and steel is an awesome weapon for killing mobs and a useful tool for clearing unsightly leaves from harvested trees.

drasnor I can help you with the water thing if you have a project you want to do.

I'll take you up on that later, no need now since we're getting a wipe.

It's pretty damn convienient that a "glitch" causes trees in Kingpin's area to burn like mad, AND burn out every single piece of wood flooring on the inside of his fort, which just happens to be separated by a very large chunk of water.

Everyone always cries glitch. How often have we seen any of our copious forests, trees, and wooden structures spontaneously combust? There is no real example of this happening anywhere on the server with the exception of our creations. And we would know, too, as the burning wood never dies out.

Bandrik, just because you're so content with yourself to be responsible with fire and TNT means nothing when you consider all of the people who have access to that stuff and won't be responsible. I completely agree with Thrax - if the mod has options for lighting lamps and fireplaces, then to hell with TNT, Flint and steel, and lava tiles. If those examples listed aren't compelling enough reasons to put that crap on the ban, I don't know what is. They're habitually abused, we don't need them.

I don't know anything about the map editors, but this may very well be both feasible and easy. If the map editors let you go by chunks, then all you do is take the newest map with the burned parts, pull the unburned chunks of Kingpin's area from the older map, and transplant them in.

Heck, you could do that with Hometree as well if that works in map editors. Take an older backup from 2 months ago and revive Hometree.

If only it was that easy for the Na'vi. :3

Okay. Then I propose that if we need Llamacraft, then we really should consider stricter whitelist requirements. I don't know what requirements would be equal and fair, without it being just a judgment call based on opinion or playing favorites (which would inevitably end in someone feeling butthurt). Maybe a requirement of 100 posts on the IC forums, or been around for 3+ months. Whatever. But maybe we should have more stringent requirements than letting anyone in, lest we all start building our houses out of obsidian and bedrock.
