ShortMedia Band

ok, this is just an idea, but I think it could be alot of fun. Many of you know of a group called The Postal Service who is named such because they spent no time in the studio together, mailing DAT tapes to members to add material or suggest changes. Maybe the musicians here could do something similar. Email or even set up an ftp site with songs to work on, add your content to a new entry and then have other members of the band decide if it should stay, go or just be changed a bit. With the collective of different unfluences and styles we could make some really original tunes! Whattaya think?

Okay. I can add vocals. I can also play guitar (classical (not that good)) and mouth-harp. I used to play a mean drum-set as well, but I haven't had a set in years, and I'm proly rusty anyway by now.

Sounds like a decent startup, I know of an excellent drummer, but he's not on the board and I'lld kinda like this to stay a short media thang. so we find us a drummer and we can get started. I play guitar and several years of vocal training. Man this is gonna be fun!

Hell yeah, that phat 6 string bass. VERY nice, by the way. And the beauty of the gift makes more it personall. Everybody start writing and then we'll setup an ftp so we can start building these tunes.

Where's Spinner? This is right down his alley.

I'd contribute, but I don't know that we need another Bass player. Backup vocals, maybe?

the more the merrier, hell I've heard of several bands with multiple members playing the same instrument. I say we just create, examine, listen and see what sounds nice. A fun, creative project.

What we need to do is start with someone contributing a foundation track. It can be any instrument - like mondi's "intro" or maybe tbonz can throw a drum track up here, or shorty can lay down a shred for us ;D

Then somebody calls dibs on it and takes it away for a few days to play some accompaniament for it.

We'll need someone to be the "central coordinator" - someone who has some pro audio experience and who has the software to tie all this together.

It's almost like that writing exercise: You write a line of poetry or a story down, and then leave it for the next person to write the next line, and so on.

This is actually a really sweet idea, robby.

Sounds like fun. I can lay down drum tracks yes. I work best off a riff or a bassline but I can come up with beats to play for other people to work off.

    This could be mighty interesting.

While my bass skills are sub-par and I don't have a cello anymore, I will say that I love the Postal Service. "The dream of Evan and Chan" has been stuck in my head for the past week.

We've got lots of talented musicians here, but do we have anybody with the gear, software, and skills to throw final tracks together and do mixdowns?

I meet all criteria as I'm sure some of the other guys will as well. I use Cool Edit Pro mainly but I also have Cakewalk.

Speak to my mate Mikim, he's a member but doesn't visit to often due to work but he's an ex-BBC sound dept. employee and has a home pc based recording set up with all the software & hardware required. I can certainly vouch for his production skills, he's one talented bloke when it comes to this sort of thing and he maybe interested.

The college has Adobe Audition (multi-track editor with some really sweet features) on a couple machines and my boss has a specialty in audio editing. The lab I work in has the equipment to do just about anything you want in the DV department. My time is getting a little threadbare, but I could give it a go if needed. I was a percussionist for eight years so I have a pretty good ear :)

This all sounds interesting stuff. I might be able to help in the production side, with Cubase SX, Sound Forge, Cool Edit, plus various outboard stuff. Plus I write some music using sampling and Reason.
Using an ftp server might be a good idea though, as I'm at least 6000 miles away :)

Oh, we'll definitely set up a seperate site and ftp for the collaboration. That's a prerequisite.

So, we need to have a few "bare minimums" in place for people to be able to contribute:

We need a project coordinator, much like the SMx project has a parts manager. That person will be responsible for collecting tracks, keeping track of who wrote/played what for which track, and general organization. We need a dedicated producer or two - the people that will assemble all the material into final form.

Each contributor will have to be able to meet the producer's minimum requirements for audio contributions. For example, a relatively (read: probably not with a $12 microphone - preferably direct to line in) decent quality recording in whatever format the producer prefers (.wav?)

Once a framework for a song is determined, we'll need at least a click track for the other musicians to contribute. In fact, all contributors need to be on meter. A click track or a metronome should be mandatory. Otherwise, the other contributors will have a hard time writing for a piece.

Just random thoughts for now. Any ideas?
