as long as we're not doing limp bizsh#$ covers, i dont care about the style/genre.
tunings shouldn't make much of a difference as long as you make a note that you used something nonstandard.

I'm imagining that the style/genre thing will probably be all over the map - with collaborators from different countries and different backgrounds. Things should be really cool..

I guess it makes sense for me to coordinate it since I'll be doing the hosting for it anyway. I'll coordinate the project, but I can't be a producer. Although I know a really, really good one I'm not sure if he'd be up to doing this on a volunteer basis :-/

So, who's gonna volunteer to be the rock star producer for this?

I think it's great that something origional should come from such a mix of backgrounds.
I was wondering, in the production/mixdown stages, what sort of basis, (kinda genre), would we all be working to?
I help people assemble/engineer music into it's final form, but it makes more sense when there is a path to follow. Bit like writing a story board for a movie!
At the same time though, it is great to keep the 'random' element alive, as that will spark origionality.

I don't know if you guys are joking aound or not, but do any of you do any guitar recording on the computer? I got Music Creator 2003 by Cakewalk and need some tips on this digital recording. I'm using a '91 Fender Strat Deluxe, a Boss Dr-5, and a Yamaha Psr-170.

Scuff, the recordings I did are very rough and not good quality. Cheap mic off live amp, into windows recorder WOOF! I'm not a great musician but do come up with ideas - in the same way, I can write some lyrics but I can't sing a lick. The standard family joke is that there must be SOMEONE in the world who sings worse than me, but we've never heard em yet. Not even on American Idol.

So, I'll contribute riffs and parts but nothing that is likely to get used in its 'as presented' form on the finished product.

There's no music yet. this project starts tonight.

Everybody will need an FTP program. I'm sure there are free ones. I personally use CuteFTP pro, which I bought because I use it every day and I love it. There is a free 30 day trial. I'm sure someone will pipe in with an excellent free FTP client.

You put the IP address in the hostname box, you put the username and password into the username and password boxes, and off you go.

Spinner sez on his site that music is the ultimate form of expression. I agree with that and also believe that it can be a means of communion, in that if we are able to bring something beautiful into this world, we have made this world a better place. Maybe to some it's just a song, but if that song gives anyone anywhere even just a moment of pleasure, we have made the world a better place to be.

I have no work tomorrow so I'm going to be staying really late at my rehearsal space tonight and should be able to start recording some raw drum tracks. I'll be pm'ing you prime for ftp access.

BTW - In the pic is where I get my creative juices flowing.

    EDIT - It's a panoramic, if it's too wide I'll remove it.

I'm all ready to go, I have secured a 4-track recorder for this project which I can use in conjunction with my computer in laying down drum tracks. It is really going to sound sweet using 4 microphones to capture my tracks.

I did a little bit last night mostly for myself and bettering the sound quality, but I can't really do anything until I have a rhythm to listen to. The most I can really do is come up with some drum patterns (which I will be doing), here and there which may inspire a riff or two.

    /me waits patiently for submissions

I have some riffs (including the Shorty Thump) worked out, but my #1 problem right now is recording it. All I have is this laptop and the built in mic. Needless to say, the ambient noise from the fans on the laptop are the most prominent part of anything I record.

I have to figure something out.

Mr. "I-also-build-pro-audio-computers-for-a-living" can't even record himself playing bass ;D
