AMD’s Dragon Platform
We’re sure many of you probably recall AMD’s Spider Platform that they were pushing at the original Phenom launch back in 2007. With the acquisition of ATI, AMD is now able to provide an end-to-end platform solution consisting of a CPU, motherboard with AMD chipsets and a premium AMD discrete graphics solution.
In case you are wondering what constitutes a complete “Dragon” solution, here are the requirements from AMD:
- AMD Phenom II Processor
- A motherboard with an AMD 790 series chipset
- AMD ATI Radeon 4800 series graphics card
So what happens when you combine these three magical devices? Plus 12 to strength, plus eight to mana and 2-8 fire damage. Well, not exactly. The benefits appear to be primarily software in nature with more complete tweaking in AMD OverDrive and AMD’s Fusion. AMD also claims that many vendors will be offering bundle packages including all three dragon parts.
Although we’ve generally been very skeptical of “Platform Bundles” like Spider and Dragon, we’d like to take a much closer look at the platform. Due to time constraints, we’re going to leave the Dragon platform at this point and revisit at a later date. You can look forward to a much more in-depth review of the “Dragon Platform” including the MSI 790GX board we used for testing and some of the Radeon 4800 series features.
