The card itself is quite a sight. The large double slot cooling solution looks impressive and also serves to protect components on the entire front side of the card.
Unlike the 200-series cards, the rear of the card’s PCB is exposed. We were pleased that Zotac opted for a black PCB, which often looks best with a wide variety of motherboards. Zotac’s implementation of the 9800GTX+ is in line with NVIDIA’s reference design and uses the standard length of 10.5 inches.
Like all reference 9800GTX cards, the card exhausts hot air from the case, which is our preference. The backplane of the card features twin DVI and a TV out connector that can be used with the included component cable.
Unlike the HD4850, The 9800GTX+ requires two 6-pin PCI-Express power leads. As mentioned, Zotac includes two molex to PCIe power adapters, but we’d advise against using these power adapters: If your PSU doesn’t have two PCI-Express leads, then it is probably not up to the task.
As an aside, we love the “GeForce” logo on the side of the card and believe that other manufacturers need to follow suit with this. Many enthusiasts have cases with side-windows and this is the angle the card will be viewed.
The Zotac 9800GTX+ has two SLI connectors for use in SLI and Tri-SLI systems.
The fan is angled and recessed to ensure adequate airflow when parked next to another GPU. Thankfully, most motherboard manufacturers are double or triple spacing PCIe 16x slots.
