update: I think I may have thought of something. That is to say thinking of thinking of that made me think that maybe I have a spot for the lan. I won't be able to find out until Monday morning. I'll update this thread as soon as I know.

The old office I used to be at is, without question, the perfect venue for a lan party. 15,000 square feet of vacant office space with cubicles, tables, chairs, active 768K DSL, and plenty of power.
well seems like u guys are up for suggestions...even grand rapids? well if you are i can help ya out there. last time i suggested it i got shut down tho.

This time last year I was getting ready to head up to Michigan w/QCH for the SM-LAN. My expectations were high and when all was said and done, I wasn't disappointed. It was a *REAL* blast!
This year I'm looking at the calendar reflecting on what might *NOT* be... The days are starting to fill up in June, July, and August and the longer we go with *NO* appreciable drop-dead date, the chances of getting everybody to show up are greatly diminished.
I realize I'm probably opening a can-of-worms that is best left closed since the last time this idea was broached - my gut tells me so - BUT what about looking at an alternative venue if we can't get something ironed out by the end of May.
I know in the past that Prime said that the only way he would agree to host the next SM-LAN was if it was held in Michigan (Detroit?)... I'm wondering if his stance is still firm, especially since his participation is *KEY*.
I hope everyone understands that I mean no disrespect by re-hashing this subject. I just know that a lot of effort has been put forth to make this happen and it's just not working out.
If an alternate venue could somehow ease the pain and provide a way for all of us to get together, I'd be more than happy to offer up my efforts.
It is sorely obvious that I cannot pull this thing together. I am hereby releasing all responsibility for this LAN to whomever wants to take up the reigns. I hope you guys can pull it together, I feel like a big fat failure
Hey now.... Let's not beat thy self up. It's tough to pull off a LAN, even a small one. To pull off one as great as last year... That's a gigantic undertaking. Last years was a perfect fit for what we needed and wanted. Opportunities like Dee Bee’s offered do not come often and when they do, they dry up fast.
We are all VERY hopeful for the SM-LAN'05. I looked forward to it on the way back from SM-LAN'04. I really want to see, hang out, and FRAG fellow SM'ers. The passion of this thread and ones from last summer prove that. We want a LAN and you volunteered for the chore of organizing it again. Just like your previous business ventures, not every venture is a success. The requirements like Space, 24 Hr. Access, Air conditioning, Internet access, and a cheap price... those are some serious potential roadblocks.
Let us know what you need help with. Let us know your stumbling blocks and what you expect from the LAN. What direction do you NOT want to LAN to go (not physical but organizationally). SM-LAN'05 NEEDS BRIAN and regardless if others end up organizing it, we need your blessing and, quite frankly, we need you to behind it. SM-LAN with out Brian is just a LAN.
You may have a bit of "padding" but you are not a "big fat failure".
I don't think that you can be considered a failure by any stretch of the imagination, Brian. You've done a lot of work for this, and it's definitely not your fault that the venues just didn't manage to accommodate. You're still the man!
Well by me stretching this out for months just to still be at square one is definitely a failure. I get frustrated with my lack of ability to make this happen.
My real fear is that if the LAN is held elsewhere, like chicago, I won't be able to go. But at this point I just don't care anymore because it's more important for the community for this to happen regardless of one man's wishes (mine, in this case). Not trying to make a sympathy bid or sound altruistic. I just want this thing to go down, and it looks like it's not gonna happen here. I hope Q and Ocomik can pull it together in Chicagoland.
If it is held in Chicago on a date I'm available, I'll probably be able to swing by Detroit to get a carload of people, and my uncle recently offered me use of his apartment in Chicago any time I want it Just an FYI.

I figured I'd throw my head in here, its about time. Call if you need some help, like sorting out the power situation or bossing people around
Now we have to wait all weekend to find out.

It has been vacant since we moved out last year.
THEY FINALLY LEASED IT LAST WEEK
It's taken
1) Find a PC gaming center like this one (just an example) and see what might be arranged.
2) Contact groups/sites who have had their own Lan Parties in the area and ask them for suggestions.
3) Clean out your garage and have it at your place.
I would be willing to help you with all three, if asked.
If there truly isn't anything comparable in the Detroit area, someone is missing a good business opportunity.
I shall continue to ideate.
say it with me now:
when i have an update, i'll post it
Got it
So I'll stand here... and when Penguin has an update he's free to go.
/me hears coconuts
Prime > Me. I wave my white flag, Prime you can take over. There's too much pressure.

I know Brian said he is looking but if someone can find a place and can put it all together I am sure we can find a balance.
This allows people to begin the morning process and end the rollercoaster of emotions regarding the hopefully SM-LAN.
