Most of my devices are online 24/7 anyways, so again, no worries there. If the console needs to check in every 24 hours, go for it.

What about the men and women who are shipped oversea and are in areas where they have really crappy internet or no service at all?

What about the people in rural area??

What about the people who can't afford the $70/mo premium to have a decent Internet connection in their home? (I know, I know, they should be working 80 hours a week at two jobs to better their lives instead of playing video games, right?)

When did video gaming turn into socialism? No matter the product, a certain percentage of would be buyers are not going to be able afford or use said product.

Nothing against @Thrax, but I think this is the first time I've ever sat at my computer (since I've been a part of this community) and agreed with everything he's written.

HAHAHA, nothing bad. We all have our own opinions on sooooo many things (very much me, just not very vocal at times), I've just never sat here and read everything you've written and said, "right the fuck on!" It's just my way of saying, "thanks for saying it better than I could" without needed edits :)

In ten years I don't think I have ever read anything Thrax writes and think "right the fuck on!" Our opinions have never really matched up. ;D;D;D;D
  • To be fair.... It's not that dissimilar to what we have with Steam, and most of us agree, as far as DRM goes, Steam is relatively unobtrusive.

It is what it is. It's a paradigm shift for console owners. There are some advantages to an always online gaming experience even for single player titles. Cloud save, automatic updates and bug fixes, extra content, free demos, content that's always in stock.

The issue is going to be pricing. If there is no secondary market, or an extremely limited one, it's allot harder to justify $59.99 for a game. Steam works around this by offering a fair shake on most titles. How many great games have we purchased for $5-$10? I don't see the console market shaping up the same way, but if pricing is competitive nobody should be too upset they can't re sell.

It's the way allot of PC gamers have been doing it since 2004. Console gamers are a decade behind the evolutionary curve.

Yeah I keep seeing that steam argument thrown around by Xbox fans and it's totally bunk. Not to mention, Valve have been very adamant in stating that if/when the steam servers and service shut down, they will unlock the game-to-server authentication so that you don't lose your games.

MS has been outright shifty with all of the info surrounding the XO's online requirements and policies, and even after this sneaky reveal on their site, they're still being very quiet about it. They say they worked with retailers to make the decisions they have with the XO, but I think that's garbage. The really hilarious/sad part about all of this, is that these moves were done to stifle the game resale market (from which businesses like Gamestop make the majority of their profits on) and to get some of that money back. But, in doing so, MS has basically made Gamestop an exclusive retail partner, and only serves to ensure their greater success.

Everything about the XO is completely bonkers.

Speaking of, isn't Steam's Summer Sale soon?

I've also been seeing that we aren't really sure if Sony is going to announce a similar DRM system. They haven't said that they would, but also haven't said they wouldn't. Paranoia on my part maybe. Hopefully E3 clears everything up for us.

Actually sounds a little less restrictive than buying games on steam, and on the plus side, it'll help put Game Stop out of business. It sounds like a fine compromise to me.

I at least understand and accept what is happening with the One. I'm hardly one of those mindless dullards who flock to Walmart to make an uninformed purchase, because shiny.

That's the problem. Anyone who accepts what they're seeing happen with the XO is only encouraging terrible corporate ideas and behavior. I don't find this acceptable and do not believe this should be the future of entertainment consumption.

I wish. Unfortunately, Gamestop is one of the 'partnered retailers' for the resale program, or whatever the heck they're calling it. They're getting the backing from MS rather than the death blow they deserve.

I hope you understand that it's very rare that the few change the minds of many. The expression "if you can't beat them, join them" is in existence for a reason. It's unfortunate that certain things have to be that way, but they do. That being said I still think everyone is just making a big deal out of for the sake of making a big deal. I'll buy one, and I'm willing to bet you eventually will too. Either it will get patched and all this debate is for nothing, or you'll just cave and accept the sad fact that we can't really do anything about it.

Argumentum ad populum much? Not only are you committing a massive logical fallacy there, it doesn't even rest in reality given that not a single XO has been sold yet. If enough people pay attention and decided that this DRM is bullshit, then the many will be on the side NOT buying the console. At which point, by your own logic, everyone else should not buy it as well.

Would be interesting to see pricing for console games bottom out, but consoles make their money back on licensing the product IIRC (which is why XBLA is so restrictive with its updates and pricing policy).

Either way, while I dislike what I see - this is a very vocal minority that are outraged by this. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. MS cancelled their Q&A after the E3 presentation, presumably for the points they've "expanded" upon.

Well, I wanted to contribute to this thread but it appears that most of my thoughts have already been spoken by others.

I will however say that if I were to buy a console this generation it is probably going to be the PS4. Not, because of what Microsoft has done with the X-Box One, though that doesn't help, but because Sony has had better exclusive titles in my opinon; both in this current generation as well as the previous. I'm a little disappointed that I've missed out on great games such as the Uncharted series and Little Big Planet as well as missing out on the upcoming Last of Us.

By comparison the only Microsoft exclusive I've had any interest in was Halo, which was taken in a direction I didn't particularly enjoy.

My view on the One is starting to shift. 500 dollar price point and Forza is the only exclusive title I have seen that I would consider a must have. I just can't see paying 500 dollars for a console.

    @mertesn - It's also coming to PC.

Soooo the one game that could POSSIBLY even get close to being this gen's system-seller...well, isn't going to be. You'd just be better off dropping that $500 price tag on upgrading your PC, instead.

Now that I think about it, Project Spark sounds interesting too.

Like TitanFall, it's also going to be available for the PC.
